The Dog? You Were Named After the Dog?

One time I was standing in line at the grocery store, and the bag boys were discussing the Spider-Man trilogy and which one they thought was the best movie of the trilogy. I had a differing opinion than they did, so I had to jump in and tell them my opinion. Why? Because I'm crazy like that. I like to share my opinion if it's different than others' opinions.

Similarly, the other week I was with some friends and we ran into these guys with whom, for some reason, we began to discuss movies. I actually argued about the Indiana Jones movies because they believed that Temple of Doom and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull were terrible movies. They were, naturally, wrong. All four of the movies are enjoyable but to varying degrees. And so, today you are blessed to read my list of the Indiana Jones movies in the order that I like them:

1. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

The dialogue in this movie is hilarious. They did a great job with Indiana's relationship with his father. Marcus Brody was funny. In addition, the adventure was interesting and awesome. The special effects were good, too. It's scary when Donovan turns really old and then eventually blows away. I saw it in the theater with Cash, and she actually clawed my arm at that point. It was an excellent, excellent movie.

2. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

I know it's really popular to not like this movie, but it is really, really a funny movie. Willie and Short Round provide all kinds of crazy antics in this movie. It's also reasonably scary. Seriously, when the dude pulls the heart out of the other guy's chest -- were you scared? I was. I honestly enjoy the story and the adventure. I don't know why someone wouldn't.

3. Raiders of the Lost Ark

I think that this one is borderline too scary. During the part with all of the melting faces, I really don't want to watch it. Creeeeeeepy. Otherwise, it's a great adventure. The opening classic Indiana Jones sequence can stand on it's own with awesomeness, and the villains are truly villainous. I never was a huge fan of Marion, though.

4. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

This one was really much better than I thought it would be. Having said that, it's 4th on my list. I didn't hate the ending like a lot of people did, but I was slightly annoyed by the son's character. I also wasn't in love with the animal life in the movie, but it was tolerable enough to not detract from my enjoyment of the film. I need to see it again, but I do remember thinking that it was a classic Indiana Jones movie.

What do you guys think? Do you completely disagree? Which one is your favorite of the four?

Put Raiders on top and I would agree with the order. I love the original. And I can't stand Billie. I want to slap her every time she's on screen. Is that wrong?

I hated the 4th one simply because of the ending... it would definitely be last on my list. I'm conflicted on Last Crusade and Raiders of the Lost Ark placement, they may be tied for 1st in my mind.

I originally didn't like the 4th one (aliens? really?) but after going back and watching the other three I found the cheese factor in line with the series. Also, if you're not of a Judeo/Christian background then the 1st and 3rd are just as unbelievable as the 2nd and 4th. I really liked Marion though, I thought she was smart and cool. Willie as very annoying, and Elsa was evil, so you know.

Yes, Adam. It is wrong. :)

Jill - Yeah, I know a lot of people who hated the ending.

Kiera - I'm so glad you said that about being of a Judeo/Christian background. That is how I feel about it. And while I am from that background, neither Raiders nor Last Crusade ever struck me as being quite believable at all. i.e. They're all unbelievable to me.

I remember clawing your arm, and you were so upset. Afterwards I hoped you wouldn't tell Mom and Dad that I did it because they didn't want to let me go see the movie in the first place because they thought I was too young. But I begged and begged and they acquiesced.

I'd put the original in 2nd place, because I agree that the 3rd movie was best. Sean Connery was awesome as Indiana's dad. And I loved the flashback at the beginning. I didn't like the 4th movie very much, but that's probably because of the ending. I didn't mind the rest of the movie, if I remember, but I'll have to watch it again. And yeah, the Temple of Doom is totally scary when the guy pulls the heart out!!!!

Great post topic!

LOVE Indiana Jones - give me a man in a leather jacket with a whip!! I'd switch Raiders and Temple of Doom - the evil dude in the Temple just really, really creeps me out! I totally referenced Raiders in a talk in Sacrament meeting a few weeks ago!

I hated the fourth one the first time I saw it, I thought it was wayyy too corny and didn't fit with the other's religion based themes. But then we got it for Christmas, and I watched it again, and its not so bad. And I realized the other movies had their fair share of cheese.
Three and ONe are definitely the best-made movies, and I love Sean Connery as the dad.
I too love two, even though its a little dark. I think the heart scene is just as gross/scary as the melting faces, and I can't believe I saw those shows when I was so young and impressionable. Plus, the chanting to Shiva: a little disturbing. But I still love them all.

wait...not Shiva, I meant Kali.
And..I just read Kiera's comment, and we said almost the same thing. I think its because we've discussed this together before. Funny.

I'm so happy to know another person that likes Temple of Doom. I really like it a lot. Like you said there was some seriously funny dialogue.

All the movies are unbelievable. Glowing Rocks, Death Angels, Magic Cups??? Aliens might be the most believable from a purely scientific point of view. Science does allow for the possiblity of intelligent life beyond our planet but it's not so keen on magic cups. :)
