Why I Could Never Go on A "Diet"

The other day I had a routine physical. It contained a urinalysis. The reason I shared that information is that I think mentioning a urinalysis is funny due to the movie "Fletch." Anyway, in preparation for this physical, I was supposed to fast for 8 - 12 hours beforehand and also abstain from eating sugary and fatty foods for an entire day prior to the tests. Now, I don't typically eat tons of sugary or fatty foods, but the second I told myself that I was not allowed to eat them, I craved them. For example, here is something that I would normally crave for dinner:

And suddenly, this is what I craved:

I don't even really like hot dogs! And aren't they mostly fat?

I also craved this:

I really don't crave ice cream very often, but I tell you what, the restriction of sweet stuff really caused me some serious cravings.

So hurry! Tell me that I'm not allowed to eat vegetables and grains!

You are not allowed to eat vegetables and grains!

That is really funny that you started craving those foods.

I've wished many, many times that I craved vegetables the way I crave chocolate.

Isn't that the truth... I find that when I'm not really paying attention to what I'm eating, that I actually do pretty good. It's when I focus on it that it gets really hard to eat wisely!

So, how do I make sure I'm eating well without thinking about it....?

Years ago, I went on Weight Watchers for a few weeks and gained weight! I think it's because it required that I spend more time thinking about what I was eating than I normally did. The result: I craved more "bad" foods and gave into the cravings. I know a lot of people who do great on WW, and that's totally awesome, but I realized that the more I track my food, or "diet", the less likely I am to eat properly.

I hope your physical came back with fantastic results and that you're uber healthy and will live for 90 more years...or so.

Mellissa - Thank you. I am craving vegetables already!

Sarah - One thing that helps me is by just buying foods that are good for me when I go to the store. If I have candy at home, I eat it. If I don't have it, I don't eat it.

Julie - I woke up this morning thinking of you. I think I had a dream about Paris or something. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who craves the stuff I'm not supposed to eat just because I'm not supposed to eat it. I hope you live a long and healthly life, as well. I honestly don't want to live another 90, unless I'm healthy and sane and capable of taking care of myself. Otherwise, count me out in my own due time. :)

So true, so true. I eat great, unless I am consciously trying to eat more healthy. Blizzards are my downfall..luckily I don't live anywhere near any fast food places at the moment.
