Today was one of the best days of the year. It's the day when the girl scouts drop off the boxes of cookies that I ordered from them. It's definitely a fund-raiser I can get behind. I also like it when people sell those pizza kits from Little Caesar's because they have an awesome thin-crust pepperoni, and their white chocolate macadamia nut cookie dough is absolutely delightful.
This year I got a modest stock of cookies. Three boxes of the thin mints, two boxes of the samoans, and one peanut butter box. Six boxes. That's not bad. I can probably eat that in a week.
Except, today is also a significant day. It is March 1, which I decided months ago would be the start of my yearly lent, if you will. It's not actually lent because I go without sweets, but it doesn't end at Easter Eve. I will resume my chocolate inhalation on Wednesday, April 18th when I go golfing for the first time this year. And, I'm not giving it up for any Christian reason. It's actually a selfish, vain, and rational thing that I just don't want to gain as much weight as I possibly could during this time of year.
And this year I need to be looking extra good because Cash is getting married on May 12. (Yay!) I will likely see a large number of people at her wedding festivities, and it's always good to give off a good impression to relatives who think I am otherwise a lazy moocher.
So, my dilemma is: do I stick with the original plan to not eat the cookies until April 18, or do I make an exception because I make my own rules? I typically do this for only one month. This year would be the first year of the extension.
I need your votes in the comments. Peace out.

I love thin mints! I haven't seen any girlscouts around this year; luckily Joseph brought some home from work for me this week. I didn't know that people did Lent until I moved here and people were talking about it at this time of year. Its kind of a cool thing. Good luck with yours.
I say eat them. If it will only take you a week then you can push back your sweets fast that much. I love the samoans. I might have to track down some girl scouts.
OH YEAH, congratulations to Cash! Yay! You'll have to email and tell me about it.
Thin Mints are really yummy frozen, so those would keep. You could polish off the other cookies and hit the gym hard, picking up your "Lent" period after that. (I can't believe I'm advocating eating a bunch of sweets! That's so not me!)
I say eat 'em!!!!
I just got my cookies today. 4 Samoans and 2 sugar-free brownies. (The brownies are disappinting) But the Samoans freeze really well and then you would have a reward for waiting so long to eat them. Good luck, I plan to go through a box a night.
I had a Samoa a work this week and I was so excited that I was able to limit it to just one. That will have to satisfy me until next year ... and maybe longer. The Girls Scouts are cutting the trans fats from their recipes and I wonder how that will effect the Samoas.
Stay true to your commitment to yourself! If you let yourself take the first step, it will just become easier to take the next one. I know from personal experience stuff like this can become a slippery slope. Then you'll be wishing you could go back in time.
If I can go without buying any boxes this year, you can delay eating yours. But I was lucky that Career Services (those people are so great) here at school had a huge basked full of all kinds because I literally can't afford to buy any. So I got one of each of my favorites. Hopefully I'll have an income next year.
Eat one a day (of each kind) until they're gone.
If you just gave them all away to needy people, it would give you a warm feeling inside. I promise.
I'm feeling kinda needy this week.
I agree with Dub...I'm also needy.
Why am I needy? Because I also ordered g.s. cookies and haven't received my order yet!!! I only bought two boxes and plan to have them for dinner. (j/k...or am I?)
Thanks for the comments and suggestions! I decided that I am not charitable with my girl scout cookies. They're mine! All mine! Sorry, dub and Julie!
And, I actually put them in the freezer the day I got them. I can wait.
I have been having sugar cravings in the afternoons. They're so rough; this must be slightly what drug withdrawals are like. And, I've been really cranky lately, but that might not have anything to do with the lack of sugar. Hee hee.
Brandon, thanks for being a law student and using the terminology "slippery slope" on my blog! It was perfect! If only we could somehow fit "Orwellian" into this conversation...
I know how you feel!! I gave up candy for lent, mostly because I am trying to lose wight (being married has made me fat and lazy) and so I thought hey, why don't I try this whole lent thing. There are enough catholics around here, including two in my research group.
But the real question is, why did you need our opinion about weather to eath the cookies or not? We live in a free society, and yet seek others to help make our decisions for us. Is this not in and of itself putting an orwellian filter on our own lives through the opinions of our friends?
Ok, so I just wanted to satisfy the "orwellian" craving that you were having, and having never gone to law school, I had to look it up, but I think I used it correctly.
Props on the no sugar, may the force be with you.
Sean!
Thanks for the "orwellian" comment!
Props to you for doing the no sugar lent, too!
Do you mind if I add your page to my links list? Are you going to post on your blog?
In addition to your blog, and receiving teaser cookies from J's work, I get this weekly pregnancy email that included an article about the girl scouts and their removing the trans-fats stuff.
I finally gathered all my loose change, and we went looking for girl scouts. I can't believe we couldn't find any!
Of course, that could be that we go to the store at 1:00 in the afternoon as J works in the evenings. But still, you'd think there would be some home-schooled kids or mothers out there, right?
Maybe saturday.
Cardine, Since I happen to be someone who succumbs to the candy and sugar pressure when I promise myself I won't, I think that you should remain firm and keep your goal, or lent, or whatever you want to call it. Girl Scout cookies are hard to say no to, but hey, add them to the list of things that you don't like to snack on for the moment. I can't believe how many things you don't like to snack on by the way. I was impressed. Have fun at volleyball!
Here I am at your house. You are at work, and there are GIRL SCOUT COOKIES IN THE FREEZER???!!??
Just kidding. You know they are safe.
Banana, you'd better not be eating those! I hope that you found everything you needed to entertain yourself. I see that you found my computer, but I also hope that you were able to find any books or movies to entertain you that you wanted. And snacks. Snacks are good (except the cookies).
Tearese, try Wal-Mart on Saturday. That's where I found them one year.
Thanks, everyone for the comments!
I say do whatever you please--I'm of two minds on the subject.
But I do love the title of your post!
Happy Spring!
As someone who gave her own sort of lent a shot and failed, I must advise you to HOLD STRONG!! It only makes it harder if you stray even a little. You ARE my inspiration . . . I just lack the motivation!
Thanks, Meg. I just checked, and I've lost a couple of pounds! Wahoo! Just a couple, though.
