I'll Do It Later

We all only have 24 hours in a day. The reality is that time is scarce, and if you're like me, you have many more interests and goals than time to accomplish them. Sometimes I face reality and have to accept the fact that I'm probably not going to do everything that I want to do. Also, another reality is that there are times and seasons in peoples' lives. I think it's important to acknowledge what time and season you are in so that you don't unnecessarily become unhappy if you're not meeting unrealistic goals and expectations that you have for yourself.

For instance, I used to be a little jealous of people when I was at the university when they would take these awesome trips during spring break or even on the weekends. I guess I was a poorer and busier college student than they were because I always remember thinking about how much homework I had to get done over the break, and I didn't have the funds that everyone else had in their bank accounts. It was like other people had money and time growing on trees, and I didn't. Anyway, I didn't feel badly for myself at the time; I was just puzzled as to how people did it. And now I get to travel! Maybe not as much as some people travel, but I get to go enough for me to feel pleased with my situation. And maybe they get to travel, too, but maybe not. Who cares? I am happy that I get to travel now, no matter what other people are doing.

I've been thinking about this because sometimes I think of things that I will do later when I have more time. Realistically, I know I won't really have more time unless I make it a priority to do these things (i.e. I should probably try to fit them into my life right now), but at least they are on the list of desires I have. So here is my partial list of things that I always say I'll do later:

1. Read lots of books - I just never make consistent time for this. It's not like I can pull out a book and read it at work. A lot of times I end up binge reading, like dropping off the face of the earth and reading a book over the course of a day or a few days. Traveling and reading books is also good, and I tend to read more over holidays or on my vacations. I always imagine having babies and reading while I feed them, since my mom always says that she used to do that all the time when she fed us. Speaking of...
2. Have babies - Yeah, I totally don't have any. I figure I can do that later. I know that there is only so much time when females can physically have babies, so maybe I should work on this sometime.
3. Date - This comes way before having babies. I should have listed this before babies. Anyway, I seriously think to myself somewhat frequently: I don't have time to date. I can date in a few months when I will have more time. I don't want to flirt with _____ right now because I don't have time to date him if he asks me out. I will flirt with him later. You can see how I have a problem.
4. Get married - This should come before having babies, too. I always project myself at least two or three years away from getting married. The time never ticks down, though, in my mind. It's always two or three years away.
5. Do more family history - I have a lot of desires to do family history research, and I do a little here and there, but I would like to do it more frequently than I do. Much more frequently. I always hope that someday in two or three years when I get married and then have babies that I will be staying at home raising kids and doing family history and reading while feeding the baby. The problem here is that I've never heard any parent say that they have plenty of time for everything. In fact, most parents seem really busy like they are running here and there and everywhere and not getting done everything that they want to do. They seem kind of crazy sometimes or like a good portion of their life is spent in crisis mode of having to take care of immediate kid problems, like poop and vomit. It seems really relaxing. That was sarcasm.
6. Travel to all the continents and U.S. states and to outer space - I have a confession that I would love to space travel on a vacation. This is not realistic. I understand this. I understand that while I have many years probably still on this earth that my traveling will probably deteriorate if I do #4 and #2 from this list. I also understand that currently space travel probably isn't in my budget. I think it's pretty pricey still, and I'm just getting older. I bet that when space travel is a little more common for average people and vacationers that there will be some kind of medical and fitness exam that people will have to pass to be able to participate in it, sort of like SCUBA diving. I am only getting older, so the likelihood of passing whatever physical is necessary to go to space dwindles with each passing year. This is reality that I have to face, and when I daydream about it as I lie in bed to sleep, I really wish that I could do it someday. I'll do it later.
7. Exercise regularly - I exercise on occasion (I tend to do better during this time of year), but I'm not one of those people who has a strict routine. I always think that I'll start exercising regularly someday when I'm not single and my life has become boring and routine. As a single person, I really like the fact that I can generally do whatever whenever I want. I don't have many routines because single people shouldn't have to have routines, right? RIGHT?!
8. Buy things - Sometimes I just don't get around to buying stuff that I want. It's not that I can't afford them, but it is that I don't take the time to shop for them. Like clothes. I should buy more clothes, especially dresses and skirts because I am really sick of my current selection. And pants and shirts and shoes. It takes a lot of effort for me to find what I want in this department, so I always tell myself that I'll do it later. Also, I want a nice TV stand and outdoor furniture for my back porch and other cute decoration stuffs. I'll find this stuff later. Maybe I wouldn't have money if I did buy this stuff, though...
9. Visit people - I love people. I want to hang out with my family and friends who live away from me, but I don't seem to make the time to travel to see them as frequently as I'd like to see them. I know realistically that I physically am unable to visit everyone as often as I'd like to visit them, but I still want to do it. I have the desires. I am thankful for things like phones and blogs and email and Facebook that allow me to at least keep up with people in a little way, even if I'm not visiting them, especially since I always think I'll visit people later and rarely do.
10. Hobbies that I love - Since I have acquired a love of hiking, I have a long list of hikes that I want to try. I have a long list of plays and operas I want to see, concerts to listen to, foods to try, sporting events to watch or participate in, museums and art pieces to visit, new hobbies and crafts to learn experience, and there are just a thousand activities that I want to do. I will do them all later.
11. Service - There are a lot of ways that people need to be served. There are people to feed and house, hearts to lift in trials, people to educate or help find jobs, good news to share with everyone, places to beautify in the world, etc. I want to do them all. I want to help everyone have every good thing. I will do it later.

So you can see the puzzle. So many dreams and desires, and not enough time and/or means. I will do them all later. Or maybe I should figure out how to do them now.

The Elusive White House

I have a bunch of other goals that aren't on my goal list. I just keep them in my head, and they are more like hopes and desires. Places I want to go, people I want to meet, etc. If I were to really list all of my hopes and desires, the blog post would be WAY too long, and you'd never make it through the whole list. One hope and goal is to someday take a tour of the White House. THE White House. Like, where the U.S. President lives. You know the one.

The White House has eluded me in my lifetime. When I was a child, some of my siblings and I were in this show choir group called Young Citizens of America. We would sing and dance and provide entertainment and learning about our national forefathers. We were quite the patriotic youngsters. We performed in some notable national buildings and landmarks, as well as malls and other regular locations. There was one Christmas season when we were invited to perform at a Christmas party and also the White House for President and Nancy Reagan. The problem was that not all of us could perform there because our group was too big. The leaders decided that they would choose a smaller group of us to perform with some alternates in case some of the group got sick or couldn't attend.

The day that the call came to our house to inform us of the group, I waited to hear if I would be able to go. I had wanted to go perform for President Reagan so badly. I had received a book about the White House and President Reagan a few years earlier, and I had become a little bit of a fan. Alas, two of my sisters were chosen to go with the other who was chosen as an alternate. I was devastated. I think that my parents had never heard so much crying and devastation from me. I could not be comforted. (Don't worry, I got over it mostly.) So, two of my sisters ended up going and singing and getting a nice picture of them singing for the presidential couple, which was signed by the President and Nancy. Yay for them!

Skip forward eight or nine years later. I was in a high school group, and my team partners and I had taken state in our category and were able to compete at the national level. The national convention was in Washington D.C. We went to our competition. One of the days, we had a chance to take a tour of the White House. The tour group was leaving at 7 a.m. or something really early like that. Well, I was dumb. I had been staying up pretty much all night the other nights that we had been there. We had made friends with other people who were there, and the dumb boys we had met were keeping us up (mostly by our own choices). I was so tired that I decided to get a few precious hours of sleep instead of going to the White House. Stupid, stupid teenager Cardine.

So now I have only myself to blame for never having taken a tour of the White House. I guess I'll have to go back to visit again sometime. Let's hope I'm not a dumb teenager the next time and that I actually take the opportunity when I have it. Sometimes life gives you amazing opportunities. You just have to realize that it's up to you to seize the day, ignore unnecessary distractions, and take those opportunities. So that's my challenge to you, readers. Is there an opportunity that you could be taking that you aren't, just because you're distracted by something else or just because you aren't acting on it? If so, I challenge you to take it and see how awesome it can be.

Goal List III

Something tells me that I need to revise my goal list because I am just not completing very many of them. I'm just not committed to completing them, I guess, and that tells me that I need to discard some of them and make new ones. Or maybe I should just do some more short term goals.

Here are the goals that I completed since the last time I updated this list:

1. Eat by myself at a restaurant: The other day I thought to myself, "This is ridiculous. I should just complete that goal and go out to eat by myself." It's kind of hard to do because I want to invite people to go with me. Well, I went and got sushi and felt like I should have invited people the whole time I was there. And then I realized that I had already eaten by myself when I was in Japan and Thailand. Oh well. I forget these things.
2. Go on The Price Is Right: Emily, Warnser, and I went down to the show the other day. We had tickets for a different taping, but they basically forced us to go to the Halloween episode, so when you watch, we are way back in the back not wearing costumes. It was fun. I will have to go another time as originally planned with Cash and Tino, and hopefully that time someone can get called on down. It was cool to go on the show for the taping.
3. Go on the entire length of the Canyon Trail in one trip: I did this with one of my friends. I enjoyed it because we always have good conversations, and it made the approximately 7 miles go by pretty quickly. My foot hurt me a lot after that hike, but fortunately, there wasn't anything really wrong with it. I just have small bones in my feet. That's not too surprising to me.
4. Go to Lagoon: I didn't go to the water park portion of the park, but I think I'll have to do that another time. Maybe someday when I have kids I can take them there, and we can go to the water park part of it. I don't feel like it's a high priority for me right now. But, I did actually go to the park and go on a bunch of the rides. It was fun.
5. Write something cool: I wrote a song, entered it in a competition, and didn't win. I like the song, and I am proud of myself for completing it, even though it didn't win. It was a good learning experience. I have another one partially written, but I am not really motivated to finish it right now. I'm not sure it's cool, per se, but I am counting this as completed.

Here are some things I accomplished that weren't necessarily on my official goal list, but they could have been on there, as they were things that I desired to do:

1. Eat octopus: I tried some in the form of sushi when I was eating by myself. I think I need to try it in another form. It wasn't bad, but I am told that it can be so much better, so I'd like to have it in a non-sushi form sometime.
2. Go to Japan and Thailand: I had a layover in Tokyo one time, and since that time, I've felt a longing to go out and check out the country a little bit more. That's one reason I was really happy to go this year. I really enjoyed Japan. I could totally live there sometime. Thailand was cool, too, and were I to go another time, I would probably want to tour the countryside a little more instead of staying in the city the whole time.
3. Hike Havasupai: I have been wanting to do this for some time. Hiking ten miles in and ten miles out was no small feat for me with a pack. I twisted both of my ankles on the trip, but I was able to still make it with just the soreness. I had a rough time with the switchbacks up at the end, though. I guess I should try to be in better shape. Also, it was really cool and beautiful, and I loved it. Maybe I should go again and take the helicopter out next time!
4. Buy a painting I enjoy for my living room: I bought one that I like, and I started adding more decorations to my house. I'm still not where I want to be, but I'm getting there. Decorating a home is like an eternal project.
5. Be in a bell choir: I really enjoyed it. I could probably do it again sometime, but it's just not a priority for me this year. I really think hand bells are beautiful.
6. Grow things in a garden: I have had a few potted plants, and they are growing but not very well. I need to tend to them better, but I forget about them most of the time. I grew tomatoes last year. This year I planted a couple of tomato plants and jalapeno plants. They haven't produced yet. I don't think I get enough sun where I live to sufficiently nourish them. Maybe someday when I have an actual yard it will work out better. I am going to try to grow a peach tree or two now, too. My parents have an awesome peach tree, so I'm hoping to be able to grow something from that and either sell it or plant it myself if I buy a new place at some point.

I can't think of what else I've done, but I'm sure I'm missing stuff! Probably some big ones, too. I have been having fun and enjoying myself with all of the activities I choose, and I hope to continue to do new and exciting things.

Here are the goals remaining.

1. Eat brains
2. Learn how to knit
3. Learn how to crochet
4. Learn how to weave
5. Be able to play all of the hymns well
6. Make the shot in pool where there's four balls that go in different pockets
7. Get above 150 points in bowling (I may have actually done this one; I can't remember)
8. Try on lace-up pants
9. Go on a walk with my sweetie's hand in my back pocket and mine in theirs (I think I'm going to kick this one off)
10. Make out at the 'C'
11. Go to the birthday ball and dance
12. Go latin dancing
13. Go to an NBA game
14. Go to a Monday Night Football game
15. Take a hula class
16. Go surfing
17. Go to all 50 states (I still lack Alaska, North Dakota, Hawaii, Rhode Island)
18. Go to Australia
19. Get up and exercise before work for a whole week
20. Go sky diving (still a lesser goal)
21. Go bungee jumping (still a lesser goal)
22. Go to a Red Sox game in Boston
23. Learn how to play all of the primary songs well
24. Figure out the Rubik's Cube - getting close to this, but I'm not quite there.
25. Read all of the Jane Austen canon - I read P&P, S&S, and I'm on MP right now. I am stuck with no motivation. I'd rather read other stuff, I guess.
26. Get a manicure
27. Go to IKEA and eat some Swedish food there
28. Ride in a helicopter for fun
29. Fly (steer) a plane

I just don't feel very passionate about them right now. The ones I feel the most passionate about are the travel ones, and you can only do so many of them in a year, due to time and money. At least I'm like that. Maybe you're richer than me with more time to spare. Somebody needs to light a fire under me because I'm just not very motivated right now. I need to ponder this and figure out what I really want to work on right now and really work on it. I've been working on some things in my house and on making some foods that I've never tried to make before. That has been somewhat interesting. I need to shake things up a little. I think I'll work on that. I think I'll work on shaking things up.

Nearing the End of the Year

This week it's going to be December. I can hardly believe it. When the week of Thanksgiving began, I kept thinking that it just couldn't be Thanksgiving already! Where did the year go? What have I accomplished this year? Did I accomplish any of my goals?

I mean, since my last goal list post, I have been working on some of those goals, but the only one I truly accomplished was going to Lagoon. Nevertheless, I have accomplished a lot, thinking back on it. The reality is that I have all sorts of unwritten goals in my head. I only made one New Year's resolution, and I rocked that one this year. It was accomplished mostly in early January, if not completely and maintained throughout the year.

Another goal I'm happy to have achieved was to purchase a painting for my living room. I finally tracked down the name and painter of the painting I really wanted and once and for all wrote that one off, as I called the entity who owns the rights to the painting and was informed that it will not be sold. So, I was able to, in good conscience, buy my second choice painting, which I think goes great in my room. It matches the couches. Now, if only I could find the additional throw pillows I want for the room...

And in all the other areas, they are a work in progress, but the point is that there has been progress, and that's important. I also accomplished all of the goals for myself that I didn't write down that I felt were most important. My object is to simplify my life and to figure out just a few things that I feel are really worthwhile and to work on those. There are only 365 days in a year. Approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of that is spent sleeping. Another good portion is spent working. Time is short. Do what you want, but make sure it's what you really want!

So, what do you really want?

List of Goals II

Well, it's been over a year and a half since I've updated my goal list. I don't actually feel compelled or pressured in any way to keep it updated on here, but I'm just doing this for myself so I can mark off some items that have been accomplished and add more stuff to the list. So, I hope you enjoy lurking into my life a little.

Goals Accomplished:

1. Read an entire Ensign - I have added this to my mental perpetual goal list for the conference edition and will try to do this every six months. I also want to be better at browsing the monthly editions.
2. Build a kite & fly it - It was a crappy 99 cent kite, but I do believe I am going to count it.
3. Become a "True T-bird" - What a relief. I'm so glad to get this one off the list.
4. Own a widescreen TV - I like it. It's nice to have.
5. Own a house - Well, I am in debt now, and it's a townhome, but I am still happy about my choice to buy it. It was the perfect timing for me.
6. Do endowments in another language (preferably Spanish) - This one was inadvertent. I arrived just in time for the session and then realized that most people were wearing headphones. It was a Spanish session. Good thing I understood it.
7. Take a hula class - I didn't take a hula class, but I did take a belly dancing class, and it was enjoyable. If they do it again this summer, I would like to do it again. I'm counting this as a successful goal accomplishment, and I'm keeping the hula class on my goal list, too.
8. Go to all 50 states - I went to Montana. I was there for approximately 15 minutes eating a huckleberry ice cream cone purchased there, so I'm counting it. Especially since I went for the purpose of marking it off my list. I still have 4 left, though.
9. Go to Africa - I went to Egypt, which, if you didn't know, is in Africa.
10. Go to Jerusalem - Enjoyable. I'll do a post (with photos) about this later!
11. Get up and walk the treadmill before work for a whole week - I think I got up and exercised before work when I would spontaneously wake up early after I got back from Europe in January. It didn't last, and I'm not sure it was actually for a whole week, so... partially counted. I'm going to keep this one on the list. Progress has been made, though.

So, 11 of my long-term goals have been somewhat accomplished. Yay for me! I also have done some things that weren't on my goal list but that maybe should have been, such as:

1. Ride in a hot air balloon - That was awesome.
2. Go through a band break-up - It's all part of the band experience.
3. Climb up the Western Wall in Jerusalem, hike Hezekiah's Tunnel, go in an Egyptian pyramid... well, there are lots on here that I will detail in my Israel/Egypt trip post.
4. Successfully make red curry, mango sticky rice, and the discovery of bacon-wrapped jalapenos. Also, making my own salsa for the first time. And even though it wasn't too spicy, it was actually tasty.
5. Go four-wheeling - It was enjoyable. I had fun with the guy I went with, too. He should get bonus points in heaven for that one, especially since we're pretty incompatible. Nice guy, though.
6. Try bacon-flavored cupcakes - Bacon in cupcakes actually works alright. The only problem is that I'm not really a maple fan.
7. Go to England/Belgium/The Netherlands/France - I didn't do the making out on the streets of Paris as was suggested in my last post, but I guess I could do that next time I'm there. Okay, so I'm not planning to go there again ever, but I could find myself in the area someday. Who knows? But I did do a lot of stuff on that trip that was awesome like eat Christmas pudding in the Crypt, survive the New Years metro in Paris, see Wicked, etc.
8. Buy awesome kitchen knives - This is one of those things where you don't realize what you were missing until you got them. I love my knives.
9. Make pretty curtains - I am proud of them because I didn't use a pattern, I made them in just a couple of hours, and I don't hate them. It's really an accomplishment for me to sew something that I don't really hate.
10. Cook a turkey - I should probably try to do this one a little better next time. At least I got a thermometer for my birthday, so now I will know the temperature of it!
11. Make food for myself for dinner for Jan - Apr so that I eat well during those months and don't just get lazy and eat junk/boxed stuff. I did a really good job with this one this year, and I would like to pat myself on the back for that one. I just need to keep it up now.
12. Watch a claymationy movie and enjoy it ... mostly - I watched "The Corpse Bride" with some friends and made it through relatively unscathed. I didn't have any nightmares about it, and was only tolerably bothered by the animation. This is success!
13. Get a pedicure - I actually really, really liked it. Note to self: do not turn into that lady from the Baltic cruise who got pedicures every week and seemed kind of shallow.

Now, to update my current list of someday goals:

1. Eat brains
2. Learn how to knit
3. Learn how to crochet
4. Learn how to weave
5. Be able to play all of the hymns well
6. Make the shot in pool where there's four balls that go in different pockets
7. Get above 150 points in bowling (I may have actually done this one; I can't remember)
8. Try on lace-up pants (preferably leather)
9. Go on a walk with my sweetie's hand in my back pocket & mine in theirs (yes, totally awkward...and I kind of can't see myself doing this...reconsidering...)
10. Make out at the 'C'
11. Eat by myself at a restaurant
12. Go to the birthday ball and dance
13. Go latin dancing
14. Go to an NBA game
15. Go to a Monday Night Football game
16. Go on The Price Is Right
17. Take a hula class
18. Go surfing
19. Go to all 50 states (I still lack Alaska, North Dakota, Hawaii, Rhode Island)
20. Go to Australia
21. Get up and exercise before work for a whole week
22. Go sky diving (still a lesser goal)
23. Go bungee jumping (still a lesser goal)
24. Go to a Red Sox game in Boston
25. Learn how to play all of the primary songs well
26. Figure out the Rubik's Cube
27. Read all of the Jane Austen canon
28. Write something cool - I'm going to have to figure out exactly what my goal is here, but I'm forming one, and I have a few ideas.
29. Get a manicure
30. Go to IKEA and eat some Swedish food there
31. Go on the entire length of the Canyon Trail in one trip
32. Ride in a helicopter for fun
33. Fly (steer) a plane
34. Go to Lagoon

I have other goals, but some of them are more short-term. And I know there are some that I've mentally made but haven't added to the list. This is good enough for now for my blog, though. Thanks for reading.
